Known for its last-minute weekend travel packages, Site59.com unveils today Meet Me In, an ambitious, original tool capable of coordinating travel plans for up to four people traveling from two cities to a common destination in the U.S. or abroad. It's an exciting concept that aims to simplify and reduce the cost of coordinating trips, seemingly tailor-made for reunions and impulsive getaways.
Here's how it works:
1. Go to site59.com and pick two departure cities. Depending on which cities are selected, a drop down menu reveals the choice of destinations (keep in mind that major departures cities will have more options). Pick a destination and specify if two or three people are traveling.
2. Choose either an air-hotel package or an air-car rental one. Assuming the former, an estimated lowest package rate will appear and then a series of 20-30 potential hotels. Be warned that the lead hotel can be less-than-desirable (located at an airport, on the outskirts or very budget) and most other hotels will require paying extra.
3. Then a series of flight itineraries are paired to illustrate how the plans of the travelers from each departure city compare. They even provide a nifty total of how many days and hours you'll spend together and highlight how close the arrival and departure times of your flights are.
4. The option to add car rental.
And how well, exactly, does it work?
Scenario A: A long-distance boyfriend and girlfriend meet for a European getaway
Departure cities: Seattle and San Francisco
Destination: London
Cost: $1604 for one hotel room over three nights (Sat-Mon), plus both airfares. Pros: With both departure cities located on the West Coast, the flights aligned perfectly, allowing both people to depart on Friday morning, arrive at the exact same time on Saturday, and depart at the same time, early afternoon Tuesday.
Cons: Site59 only permits booking up to two weeks in advance, which is short notice for planning an international vacation that would require taking two days off work.
Scenario B: Two siblings and a brother-in-law meet for a sister's wedding
Departure cities: Albany, NY and Bangor, ME
Destination: Charlotte, NC
Cost: $1309.56 for two hotel rooms for two nights, plus three flights.
Pros: Split three ways, the price is quite reasonable considering that the smaller-scale cities in question typically have more limited/expensive flights. Cons: The flights didn't coordinate well on the return. From Charlotte, the only flights to Albany were early in the morning while the only ones to Bangor were late-afternoon or early-evening. Also, since there is a whole wedding party coming into town for the weekend, the travelers might have preferred to coordinate plans with a larger party (currently travel can't be booked through Site59 for a group larger than four). Groople.com, on the other hand, specializes in travel plans for big groups.
Scenario C: Two college pals meet for some sun and fun
Departure cities: Chicago and Los Angeles
Destination: Miami
Cost: $826.57 for one hotel room for three nights, plus both flights.
Pros: Reasonable rate.
Cons: Again, the flight match-up was disappointing. The friends had requested a Thurs.-Sun. trip, but the only available flights from L.A. arrived Friday morning, whereas the flights from Chicago arrived on Thursday night.
'Meet Me In' is easy to use and tends to be best at optimizing the amount of time spent together when the departure cities are located in the same geographic region (i.e. northeast or west coast). It makes the most sense for those who have the flexibility to make plans on a whim as opposed to those who are coordinating a larger-scale event like a wedding or reunion or date-specific occasion and must do so further in advance. And the further the foreign destination, the less logical it seems to travel there for a long weekend.
