The city's historic, cultural heart came through Hurricane Katrina largely unscathed, but residential areas such as Lake View and the infamous Lower Ninth Ward are making a slow, house-by-house recovery and still need all the help and tourist dollars they can get.

New Orleans Fine Hotels, a group of nine properties in the French Quarter and Central Business District, has joined forces with Volunteers of America, Catholic Charities, and Katrina Krewe to grant volunteers working with these three organizations free and discounted stays. One hundred free rooms per night have been allocated for the first two organizations and 25 additional rooms are set aside for Katrina Krewe's three summer clean-up weekends: Jun. 23 - 25, Jul. 28 - 30, and Aug. 25 - 27.

If free rooms are not available for your travel dates, you can at least take advantage of New Orleans Fine Hotels' discount program: stay two nights and get one night free or stay three nights and get two nights free. Regular rates range from $79 to $129 before taxes of 13 percent. The two discounts are also good for anyone who volunteers for at least one day with any legitimate volunteer group while on vacation. Upon checkout, you'll need to present proof of the volunteer work, such as a signature on the organization's letterhead.

You can request to stay at any of the participating hotels: Chateau Dupre Hotel, Historic French Market Inn, Holiday Inn Express Hotel, Hotel Le Cirque, The Lafayette Hotel, Parc St. Charles, The Pelham Hotel, St. James Hotel, Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel

Getting to New Orleans: Here are the lowest fares we've found for round-trip travel to the Big Easy in early June: $141 (Continental) from Houston; $144 (Delta) from Miami; $204 (U.S. Airways) from Philadelphia; $219 (American) from New York City and from Chicago; $331 (Northwest) from Los Angeles.
