MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., Atlanta, Ga.
The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site encompasses the two-story home where King was born in 1929 (a replica of his crib is in his parents' room); Ebenezer Baptist Church, where his father and grandfather were pastors (and where he later served as co-pastor); and his grave site. Though many states declared January 15, King's birthday, a holiday shortly after his assassination in 1968, it didn't become a federal holiday until 1986. 501 Auburn Ave., 404/331-5190, nps.gov/malu, free.

JULIETTE GORDON LOW, Savannah, Ga.
Low formed the U.S. Girl Guides in 1912—she based it on the already existing English organization—and changed the name to the Girl Scouts a year later. She was also an accomplished sculptor and painter. Watercolors, portraits of her parents, and hand-painted china are on display in the house where she was born on Halloween night in 1860. It's now a national center for Girl Scouts and a National Historic Landmark. 10 E. Oglethorpe Ave., 912/233-4501, girlscouts.org, $8.
