ERNEST HEMINGWAY, Oak Park, Ill.
Before he was a World War I ambulance driver, a member of Paris's "Lost Generation," a correspondent during the Spanish Civil War, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Ernest Hemingway was a typical boy growing up in a typical Chicago suburb. His father was a doctor who took the boy on hunting and fishing trips to Michigan. His mother, an artist, taught him to appreciate cultural benefits of the city, like museums and opera. The Hemingway Birthplace Home has been restored to look just as it did during his childhood, with carpeting, curtains, and wallpaper matched from old photographs. 339 N. Oak Park Ave., 708/848-2222, ehfop.org, $5.
