WILBUR WRIGHT, Hagerstown, Ind.
In 1903, Wright and younger brother Orville made aviation history with their 12-second flight at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, N.C. It is now generally accepted as the world's first engine-powered, controlled, and sustained flight. Amazingly, the Wright brothers' aeronautical skills were self-taughtneither boy ever went to college; Orville never even finished high school. At the Wilbur Wright Birthplace and Museum, in Indiana, a replica of the house sits on the original foundation, and there's a full-size model of the brothers' first airplane. 1525 N.
