HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW, Portland, Maine
Longfellow, one of the most widely read poets of his day, was also a scholar and linguist who traveled widely in Europe and taught at Bowdoin College and Harvard University. He was also the first American to publish a translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. Virtually everything in the Wadsworth-Longfellow House is original, including the desk where he wrote "The Rainy Day," his high chair, and a piano he bought while honeymooning with his second wife, Fanny. 489 Congress St., 207/774-1822, mainehistory.org, $7. |
