With his adventure-filled tales of pioneer life, frontiersmen, and Native Americans, 19th-century novelist Cooper brought the American wilderness vividly to life in stories like The Last of the Mohicans. The library behind the James Fenimore Cooper House-where the writer was born in 1789-contains an 1856 edition of his complete works.
