As a founder and the first president of the Tuskegee Institute, Washington championed both economic and academic advancement as the best ways for African-Americans to overcome racism. Among the reconstructed buildings at the Booker T. Washington National Monument, there's a kitchen/slave cabin where Washington lived with his mother, the plantation's cook, and his two siblings.
